. 11 minutes after 6:00. cleanup under way after those tornadoes did widespread damage in parts of the dallas-fort worth area. the national weather service teams are now expected to spread across that region today, looking at exactly how much damage was done. here's abc news' mary ellen
6:12 am
hopkins. reporter: semi trailers were thrown like matchbox cars, power lines snapped and flared like fireworks and the roof of this house was peeled away, making it look like an unfinished doll house. vincent tang recorded this twister from the roof of his home in lancaster where about 300 buildings were damaged. >> screaming oh, my god, please do not hit my house cause i don't want any of my neighborhood to get hurt and also i don't want myself getting into that moment. was i ever scared. i was never scared like this. reporter: lancaster's mayor had some new advice for the newly homeless. >> we would ask that people seek shelter outside of the city if they have that luxury. if not, again, our recreation center is is open and available as a temporary shelter. reporter: this what's left of a house in arlington. a woman and her two sons survived by taking shelter in a bathtub. >> it was like a freight train.
6:13 am
it was very, very loud. reporter: a passenger shared this video of heavy hail pounding his plane as it taxied at the dallas-fort worth international airport. the plane returned to the gate and the flight was canceled. the airport says hail damaged more than 110 planes. airlines canceled 400 departures and more than three dozen incoming flights were diverted. mary ellen hopkins, abc 2 news. >> be sure to stay with abc2news.com for the very latest. you can track these tornadoes and the severe weather by clicking on our weather tab, then clicking tornado alley. you can watch storm chasers, and also see new video and pictures right there, abc2news.com. le you look at the videos of that storm and the aftermath and you can just shake your head. so much cleanup going on today. >> when i first saw that video i had to do a double take. is that a piece of paper flying in the air? no, that's an actual truck. just to put it in perspective, 30,000 pounds, that's how much those trucks weigh.
6:14 am
>> unbelievable. unbelievable. wow! let me show you what's going on right now in texas. they are getting a break. that's definitely some good news as this system slides off more towards the east. they will not be under the severe weather threat for today, but you can see where the heavy rain and the thunderstorms really coming down now in louisiana, also mississippi, so this area is is under a tornado -- let me rephrase that, under a severe thunderstorm watch and some flash flood warning. now, this again pushing off toward the east as we go through the day. so not only is that area under the severe weather threat, but we also have the carolinas under it and also the virginias as we go into time. but we're going to be just cloudy with a few peeks of some sunshine as we go into the afternoon, maybe a stray shower, an isolated shower, maybe a rumble of thunder, but all in all we should stay mainly dry for today. and we can see in these temperatures, these colors, these warm yellows and greens, well, that's where all that warm moist air is really helping to fuel some of those thunderstorms around jackson, montgomery, even in memphis for
6:15 am
today. but we're in on the green action, 49 degrees right now in baltimore. yes, that is above where we should be now for this time of the year, about 10 degrees above. and that will persist even as we go into the afternoon. and future trend going to pick up on the fact that most of the action really stays to the south of us. but due to the fact that that cold front is going to be slicing through the area this afternoon, i'm still going to keep that chance for some showers and thunderstorms in the forecast, again, just stray, isolated in nature. not everybody will be getting hit, if anybody gets hit at all. now, 72 degrees for today, mostly cloudy skies. and then by tonight that temperature will be right around 42, mostly clear with a northerly breeze. let's get a check now of that traffic with angela. good morning, and a little bit active in texas, but what do we have here at home in terms of your traffic? reporter: good morning tou, lynette. in terms of traffic, the good news is it is all good in terms of congestion. no major delays on our major roads right now. looking pretty good around the beltway and our interstates. city police is is reporting a minor collision, that's on hamilton avenue and new home.
6:16 am
but the intersection is open. you will be able to get through. elsewhere, as we mentioned, a very nice ride out there, as we look live on the west side of 695 here at liberty road. of course that's the outer loop on the left side of your screen. got a lot of activity there, but flowing around posted speed. as we get a live look around u.s. 29, traveling through colombia, showing a much heavier commute in the southbound direction right now. it's still a good choice as all lanes are open between i-70 and maryland 32. megan, over to you. 16 minutes after 6:00 right now. in this morning's health alert, ladies, listen up, if you're a woman with an increased risk for breast cancer, you may want to consider more than just a mammogram. a new study finds getting an ultrasound screening and an mri along with a mammogram may detect additional cancers. >> mammograms tend to have a problem with detecting tumors in women who have dense breast tissue because it's basing its studies or findings on density.
6:17 am
so the other tests actually are not based on density. they actually do a little bit better with detecting breast cancers in women who have this problem. >> researchers at the american college of radiology imaging network in philadelphia screen more than 2500 women using mammography, ultrasound and mris. results show that of the 111 women who had breast cancer, 33% of them were detected by mammography. only 29% by ultrasound and only 8% by mri only. the weather is certainly good enough outside to take a walk. national walking day is today. the american heart association is encouraging everyone to take at least half an hour to get out and go for a walk. it is meant to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity and the impact it can have on your overall health. holy batman. those may have been the words when a montgomery county police officer pulled him over, the caped crusader. >> here's a look right now. we have news for this guy. here's a tease.
